A helpful booklet on keeping tabs on government from the NC Press Association and the North Carolina Attorney General's Office.

If ever a completely closed information system existed it is in Salisbury.

The Post prints only one side of an issue. Period. They misquote people in interviews or leave interviews they made with people out entirely. Many people don't want to be interviewed by them. It is hurting their subscriptions and sales because word is getting out. You want half the news--get it from a rag like the Post. They hide some facebook posters posts so you can't see them if you are not on facebook at the time. They have a skeletal staff who get paid peanuts. They cut a large number of their excellent staff to save money. It simply isn't the same paper as when Hurley owned it. The Post is in tight with the people who are hurting the city's growth and keeping business out. Whether what the Post is doing is conscious or not, they are a large contributer to the closed information society in this town and the future Salisbury distopia.

While the possibilities of closed information systems exist everywhere, Salisbury appears to be the epicenter of closed information systems outside of dictatorships and cults. Someone would be hard pressed to find a stronger example than the local paper and the downtown coffee klatch crowd. It seems ever apparent to many living in the city even the historic district where there are many open and aware minds who notice the patterns going on in city government.
